Mario & Kirby: It's a Broodal Adventure is a game for Microsoft Windows (via Steam), and the Nintendo Switch. It is a spin-off of the Brutal Knight Adventure games, but instead of the Meta-Knights and the Broodals together, it stars Hariet and Sailor Waddle Dee as they go on a adventure to stop Invader Armor, who wants to restore the Mother Computer Star Dream, and save their friends, as well as Mario and Kirby, their friends and enemies, and the entire Universe in the process.

The main antagonist is Invader Armor.

Plot

Somewhere out in space, Invader Armor approaches an inactive Star Dream. He wishes to restore it and use it to exterminate all live forms. Invader Armor hires his Haltworkers to find and capture anyone who can interfere with his plans.

Meanwhile, The Meta-Knights ride the Halberd to Rabbit Ridge for a visit. Sailor Waddle Dee, who works as a janitor in the Halberd, wishes to come along with the Meta-Knights, but he has work to do. But Captain Vul arrives and gives him a break to visit Rabbit Ridge. While following Axe Knight, Sailor Waddle Dee meets Hariet, one of the Broodals. After a quick conversation, Captain Vul tells Hariet, Sailor Waddle Dee, and the Meta-Knights to meet on top of Rabbit Ridge Tower when they are ready.

After arriving on top of the Tower, Captain Vul gives a big speech. The speech is interrupted when Invader Armor's forces attack the ridge. It is also reveled that he captured Mario, Kirby and their friends and rivals, as well as Madame Broode. Haltworkers capture Topper, Spewart, Rango and Captain Vul, while Hariet, Sailor Waddle Dee, and the Meta-Knights rush back to the Halberd, but Invader Armor takes over the battleship and captures the Meta-Knights. Hariet tries to fight Invader Armor, but she stands no chance and she and Sailor Waddle Dee retreat through a portal which Hariet built that takes them to Planet Popstar. Invader Armor and his forces leave Rabbit Ridge to continue the plan to restore Star Dream.

Meanwhile, after Hariet and Sailor Waddle Dee defeat Whispy Woods, Invader Armor heads to Bowser's Castle and hires his Haltworkers to possess Boom Boom and Pom Pom.

Hariet and Sailor Waddle Dee encounter Boom Boom and Pom Pom in Raisin Desert, Sailor Waddle Dee attempts to greet them, but Boom Boom punches him, which made Hariet realize Invader Armor had corrupted them and the 2 were forced to retreat.

Hariet and Sailor Waddle Dee arrive at King Dedede's Castle and find Invader Armor and 2 of his Haltworkers in the throne room. Before leaving, Invader Armor summons his creation, the Dedede Clone, to fight Hariet and Sailor Waddle Dee.

After defeating the Dedede Clone, Hariet and Sailor Waddle Dee find the Meta-Knights' airship and they use it to travel to Mushroom World to find Invader Armor.

After defeating the Dedede Clone again inside Dedede Robo, Hariet and Sailor Waddle Dee find data in Dedede Robo that shows the location of Haltmann Base. The duo then sets off in the Meta-Knights' airship. Along the way, Sailor Waddle Dee spots the Halberd. Hariet pilots the airship towards the Halberd, where they encounter Invader Armor and the duo prepares to battle him.

After defeating Invader Armor, he commands his Haltworkers to shoot them, causing Hariet and Sailor Waddle Dee to fall off the Arena. Invader Armor then leaves for Haltmann Base while laughing.

At Long Lost Isle, a rabbit rubs a feather against Hariet's nose, which made her sneeze. After Sailor Waddle Dee awakens, he and Hariet find the airship badly damaged so they went to find some replacement parts.

The duo find some replacement parts in possession of a Koopa Troopa, who evaded being brainwashed by Invader Armor. When they reach back to the airship. King Bob-omb arrives and attacks the duo while the Koopa Troopa goes to repair the airship.

After defeating King Bob-omb, the Koopa Troopa repairs the ship and Hariet and Sailor Waddle Dee set off to Haltmann Base.

After defeating Boom Boom and Pom Pom on Cloud Word, their minds return to normal and they aid Hariet and Sailor Waddle Dee into fighting Invader Armor's forces.

On Molten World, Hariet and Sailor Waddle Dee encounter Invader Armor again, who creates another clone (which is based on Hariet this time) to fight Hariet and Sailor Waddle Dee, while Invader Armor heads back to Haltmann Base.

On Japanese World, the duo again encounter Invader Armor, who tells them that they are too late and summons the Haltmech, with 4 of his Haltworkers piloting it.

After defeating the Haltmech, sending the Haltworkers flying, the duo approaches Haltmann Base and, with the aid of Boom Boom and Pom Pom, enter the dreaded base.

After defeating the Dedede Clone for good and traveling through Invader Terminus, Hariet blasts the door open with her bombs. Invader Armor sends Dedede out of the cage and possess him and becomes Masked Dedede once again.

After defeating Masked Dedede, Invader Armor sends Dedede back into the cage and challenges Hariet and Sailor Waddle Dee himself.

After defeating Invader Armor again, he crawls towards Star Dream and successfully restores it. Star Dream shoots Invader Armor, disabling him, and takes off to destroy all life in the universe.

Sailor Waddle Dee activates a secret program in the airship, which creates a big laser cannon to use and the duo takes off in the airship to confront Star Dream.

After defeating Star Dream (as well as its second form, Star Dream Soul OS), Hariet activates another secret program which revels a giant drill and she and Sailor Waddle Dee us it to destroy Star Dream.

The duo heads back to Haltmann Base to free the Meta-Knights, the other 3 Broodals, Captain Vul, as well as Mario and Kirby and their friends and rivals. Before they leave, the room starts to collapse, while the others manage to escape, Hariet and Sailor Waddle Dee, as well as a sill disabled Invader Armor, fall through the crumbled floor.

As the base collapses, Hariet is forced to mount and take control of Invader Armor, and picks up Sailor Waddle Dee.

The base completely collapses but Hariet and Sailor Waddle Dee manage to escape the base and land on a nearby platform where the Meta-Knights, the other 3 Broodals, Captain Vul, Mario, Kirby and their friends and rivals are waiting. Boom Boom and Pom Pom arrive and Captain Vul arrives in the Halberd to pick the others up, Hariet and Sailor Waddle Dee then jump on board.

In a post-credits scene, after arriving back at Rabbit Ridge, Hariet thanks Sailor Waddle Dee for helping her save her friends. The Meta-Knights call for Sailor Waddle Dee and says goodbye to Hariet before leaving. Spewart asks Hariet what her next adventure with Sailor Waddle Dee might be. After Spewart left, Hariet sighs.

Sub-games

Like with the Brutal Knight Adventure games, the game includes sub-games.

Extra Mode

The Extra mode of this game. Unlike previous extra modes in the games mentioned above, the mode still stars Hariet and Sailor Waddle Dee, identical to Kirby's Return to Dream Land's Extra Mode.

Differences:

  • All levels are connected. So there is no world map and stuff.
  • All bosses have more health then usual and are stronger.
  • After defeating Invader Armor, the player doesn't fight Star Dream or Star Dream Soul OS. Instead, the player faces the secret boss, Morpho Knight.

Dungeon Crawl

A dungeon crawling sub-game, the player has to go through rooms filled with Goombas, Waddle Dees, Cappies, Big Waddle Dees, Wheelies, Pokeys, Pokios, and Uproots. Unless played on endless, when the player reaches the end, the player will fight Dedede Clone.

The Ultimate Battle Choice

A sub-game identical to the previous Battle Choice sub-games in the Brutal Knight Adventure games, which are, in turn, similar to The Ultimate Choice in Kirby Star Allies. It pits the player. It pits the player against some of the bosses in the game, the higher the Difficulty, the more bosses there would be and the score will be higher. Also, like the previous Battle Choice sub-games, the player can play as either Hariet or Sailor Waddle Dee for the whole round. Completing the Extra Mode and clearing The Ultimate Battle Choice once unlocks the Intense difficulty, and clearing it on Intense unlocks the secret Nothing Harder difficulty.

Trivia

  • The game was released a day before the one year anniversary of Super Mario Odyssey, which the Broodals debuted in.
  • Some enemies have different behavior compared to previous games.
    • Cappies have a different behavior, they now slowly hop towards the player, but when the player knocks off their Mushroom Cap, they start running away in fear.
      • Multi Cappies have more Mushroom Cap, which, depending how many Caps they have on, can take more hits before they start running away. If they have more then 2 Mushroom Caps, they can occasionally slam the ground with the caps.
    • Big Waddle Dees carry spears, like Spear Waddle Dees, and when they spot the player, they charge into him/her in a similar manner to the Moblins in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
  • Poppy Bros. Sr, Miasmoros, and Kibble Blade have a similar attack strategy to Hariet, Spewart, and Rango, respectivly in Super Mario Odyssey.
  • Scarfies now have a shocked expression when attacked.
  • This is the first Mario & Kirby game since Mario & Kirby: Rivals Unite! where Wario and Waluigi don't make an appearance.
  • Hariet Clone is the only standard boss in the game with a unique boss theme.
